Academy FAQ's
What is that “Buzz Word” we see & hear all the time, “Player Development?”
Player Development is a term coaches use to describe the process of Human & Soccer Development of a Child!
Within soccer, the “Human/Child Development” should always take priority to soccer development. Physical, Physiological, Technical and Tactical (the four main components in soccer) challenges occur through activities, games & competition with other players and must be balanced with a player's cognitive thinking, age & characteristics. Using age appropriate activities, games & competition that meet the player's developmental needs enables the learning process. A soccer player's progress is created by the coach with progressive building blocks based on a fun, educational, environment where skills are learned over time.
“Player Development” is used by coaches frequently as a “buzz word” to impress parents who do not know the true meaning of “Player Development”. Oklahoma Soccer Association requires a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “National Youth License” to be held by Executive Director or Director of the program to ensure that Academy Program players receive the professional instruction needed. Youth soccer is played by youth with emphasis on fun; however, adult and coach expectations, in some cases, are more focused on the short-term result of winning. Academy soccer can be competitive through a non-result oriented fun environment that will maximize long term “Player Development.”
What is a Soccer Academy?
A Soccer Academy is a developmental program with an advanced learning environment. A Soccer Academy is for players who strive for excelled professional training & higher-level play. Players are presented with “FUN” soccer activities that involve competition by directly & indirectly naturally maximizing soccer player development with age specific professional instruction.
Why should my child participate in a Soccer Academy?
Academy Soccer is NOT for players that find recreational soccer difficult. A Soccer Academy presents greater challenges that meet the player's needs. It is for those players who want to be challenged more than their current program & foresee a pursuit in select soccer.
Are there tryouts for the Academy?
There are no tryouts for the Academy program. Player's will be placed in a “player-pool” that train & compete in games, based on their natural abilities & developmental progress. By grouping players of similar abilities, it maximizes player development. Developmental progress allows the opportunity for players to experience new challenges that echo their “Player Development”.
Can my child participate in Academy AND play on a recreational team?
Yes, you can participate in both. Oklahoma Soccer Association & Green Country Soccer Association allow participation in the Academy Program (Registered through US Club Soccer) and Recreational Soccer (Registered through USYSA). This policy supports the “Player Development” process stated above.
Where/When will Academy players participate in matches?
The Academy matches/games will be played on the same weekends as the Oklahoma Premier League (OPL).
There will be optional additional leagues & tournament opportunities for Academy players. The locations of the matches are TBA by OSA, however Indian Springs has been and is one of the major complexes used for OPL games.
Cost:
$62.50 Registration Fee + $120 (Coaches Training Fees at $40/month for 3 months).
The goal of the BASC/ Hurricane Academy is to provide the developmental bridge between recreational soccer and select soccer through “Player Development”.
